B!KE: The Peterborough Community Bike Shop is an incorporated not-for-profit organization offering a supervised shop space with tools, parts and expertise for bicycle repair.

For a $20 annual membership fee ($30 as of September 1, 2010), the shop provides:

An accessible and friendly environment for learning the basics of bike maintenance.
Professional toolsets & workstations.
A helping hand with more advanced repairs & projects

We gladly accept donations of bicycles and parts.

B!KE is located in Third Space @ Knox United Church, 400 Wolfe St (Park & Wolfe).

Workshop Rescheduled

The Hubs & Bearings workshop scheduled for Sunday, August 22 has been rescheduled to Sunday, August 29.

This workshop is available to members ($10) and non-members ($15), and will cover in detail:

The difference between cassettes and freewheels
Cassette and freewheel removal/installation
Front and rear hub servicing and adjustments
Bearings, cones and bearing surface assessment

Payment / registration is due in advance of the course at B!KE. Email with any questions or for registration.

Home Mechanic Workshops

Are you a B!KE member who is looking to learn more in-depth information about bicycle mechanics than you’ve had a chance to during drop-in hours? Maybe you are not a B!KE member but would like to feel more confident about the wrenching you’re doing at home, or would just like to better understand how your bicycle works.

Starting in May, B!KE will be offering monthly Mechanic Courses to the general public. These will be small, intensive classes covering a specific component of the bike each week.

The courses are open to everyone, but an RSVP is required for each class attended so that we can ensure class sizes are optimal for everyone.

Each class is $10 for members and $15 for non-members. Please come by the shop to sign up as payment in advance (cash only) is required for registration. Classes will begin at 1pm and run for about 1 ½ hours.

B!KE will be honouring Her Majesty’s Holiday by closing the shop on Monday, May 24th.

Project funding from Sustainable Trent!

We are proud to announce that B!KE received $500 in project funding from Sustainable Trent!
This will go towards the purchase of an awesome event tent that will not only increase the visibility of the shop at community events, but will also play a central role in our new B!KE Valet program (stay posted for news on that!). This marks the second year that we have received support from the good folks at Sustainable Trent, who helped us set up new work stations in the shop last year.
Big thanks to a great organization!

B!KE: The Peterborough Community Bike Shop is seeking candidates for our Board of Directors.

B!KE is looking for energetic, passionate individuals committed to social justice, social and transportational sustainability, gender equity and cycling politics to join B!KE’s Board of Directors. The Board members are integral to supporting B!KE’s long-term role facilitating bicycle education & support in the Peterborough Community.

Board members have:

Strong interest community support and social justice.
Excellent collaborative skills, creative thinking, and strong initiative.
Genuine interest in transportational bike culture and local cycling issues.

Board members will meet once a month, with a time commitment of 5-8 hours per month. Prior Board experience is an asset, but not necessary.

B!KE supports the excitement, empowerment and pride that comes with taking a hands-on learning approach to your own environment.
Members learn to maintain, repair and build bikes in a friendly and supportive space during regular shop hours. B!KE offers ongoing special programming through several partner organizations, and will be expanding in the coming year to provide targeted workshops, cycling education classes,
and a strong volunteer force.

Come paint the shop!

B!KE is looking for some volunteers to help beautify the shop and bring in some bright colours to complement the usual black grease.

Starting on Monday, March 8, and continuing on subsequent Monday nights for the next 3 or 4 weeks, we will be painting the entrance and front desk area of the shop.

Painting skill is not a necessity- there will be stencils and a master plan- just show up with some spare time and maybe a willingness to get a little bit dirty.
