Closed for Family Day

As per our deep respect for statutory holidays, B!KE will be closed on Monday February 15th for Family Day.

Why not go for a fun family bike ride?

Exciting News!

As promised, B!KE has exciting new developments for the New Year.

B!KE  is the proud recipient of a grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation! The grant will enable the hiring of a part-time director to manage shop hours, administration, etc.

What does this mean for you?

B!KE will be able to maintain consistent operations, expand programming (stay tuned!), and support further long-term development. We want to be a part of the Peterborough community for a long time.

Look for our new director this February…

B!KE Has New Hours!

…Yet another hours-related news update!

We have decided to pilot some new opening hours, which will hopefully be easier to remember and keep both volunteers and members happy.

B!KE’s new hours are as follows:

Monday 5:30-8:30pm

Tuesday 5:30-8:30pm

Wednesday 5:30-8:30pm

Please let us know what you think about the new time and how it affects your B!KE shop experience.

B!KE Holiday Hours

It seems all we use this News page for is closures, which is misleading insofar as we are open all the rest of the time!

Anyway, B!KE is taking a short winter break. Volunteers: recoup! Members: be good to your mighty steeds!

Closed: Sunday, Dec 20 to Sunday, January 3.

B!KE will re-open on Monday, January 4th (5:30-8:30)– with new, improved hours and very exciting news!

If you have any bikey catastrophes or revelations in the meantime, check out youtube / sheldon brown / park tool to DIY, or visit our good friends at Wild Rock Outfitters to have your ride serviced with skilled hands.

Stay well, comrades.

Closed Sunday, Oct 4: NYC Calls

B!KE will be closed on Sunday, October 4.
Sarah and Clifford are off to New York City for cycling instructor training!
An array of other awesome volunteers will be running the show on Monday and Wednesday. Be nice to them: maybe they’ll play better music on the stereo…

Closed for the Civic Holiday.

B!KE is closed Monday, August 3 for the holiday. We’ll be back on Wednesday; see you then!

B!KE Needs Volunteers

Howdy Folks,

B!KE needs volunteers, short version:

B!KE is looking for friendly people - women and men alike - to learn to become mechanics (it’s easy! no experience required: we’ll teach you in no time!) and run the shop one day (just 2-3 hours) a week. We need interested non-mechanics to do non-mechanic things: painting, greeting, postering, sales. B!KE is looking for your ideas, your energy, your enthusiasm to keep this organization going. We have a place for you; we have grants to be written, events to be planned, and taxes to be filed. This organization gives a lot to the community, and needs your energy, skill and spirit to continue existing.

If interested, please click here to fill out a short form, and we’ll get back to you. We need you!

Long version:

B!KE has been around for roughly four years, and in the current location for a little over one. In that time, hundreds of people have come in, joined up, and learned lots of valuable, self-sustaining knowledge about their bikes. It’s a fantastically vibrant and diverse institution in our city, run by people who care about community, sharing and the social power of alternative transportation. The workshop at B!KE is not filled with surly men snarking about members who don’t know the difference between a star nut and a lock ring; but rather a friendly, diverse demographic range of interested people working together in friendship and mutual support.

If you’ve been to B!KE at all in the past year, you’ll likely have worked with Sarah or Clifford. Sarah started B!KE when it was a lonely, tiny room in Sadleir House, and since 2008 we have been running the show together as B!KE transitioned to a full-fledged organization with regular hours, new and used parts, multiple workstations (not to mention writing grants, getting incorporated, facilitating a board, designing web site, managing the books, etc!). Like all the mechanics you’ve met at B!KE, we do the work on a totally volunteer basis.

The problem is this: B!KE is in serious need of volunteers. I work full-time with Peterborough Green-Up, and Sarah is working on MCATs and med school applications. Our one other regular volunteer, Tim, is in on Sundays (you rock, Tim!) — but three people do not have the time or energy to sustain B!KE into the future as-is. Our membership continues to grow - 150 as of writing this post - but our volunteer base is virtually non-existent, and stretched micro-thin already.

If you can hold a wrench, you can likely become a mechanic. And if that role seems utterly impossible to you, we have lots of other work to be done. See the top of this post for ideas & our contact form.

Merci, merci.

Canada Day and Monday July 6

B!KE will be closed for the Canada Day holiday on Wednesday. We’ll also be closed for less patriotic, more put-yer-feet-up reasons on Monday, July 6 — taking a vacation away from B!KE by going for a long bike ride!

Sunday, July 5 will be open as usual.

B!KE + Convocation

With regrets, B!KE will be closed this Wednesday, June 3rd. Clifford and Sarah are due to be gowned and graduated at Trent University’s convocation!
See you Sunday!

Closed for the Stat Holiday (Monday, May 18)

B!KE will be closed for the statutory holiday on Monday, May 18th, but we’ll see you on Wednesday!
